Today, most drugs cost over a billion dollars to place on the market (In the early 90s, it was around 350 million). As one can imagine, with this price tag, drug companies aren't going to invest much into drugs that effect minority populations (this is why there are many tax breaks and essentially free money for companies willing to look at neglected diseases). We also got to remember that FDA testing is incredibly rigorous and shouldn't be mocked. For example, by today's standards, penicillin would likely not be approved by the FDA if it was discovered today. Thus, when people discuss drugs pulled from the market, that does not mean they have no pharmaceutical benefits or they are more harmful than the disease. Some of these drugs have re-entered the market after the unevaluated-risks have been accessed. Of course, there are examples of the FDA showing little competence (Phen-Phen for one), but these are rare.If anything, the FDA standards are too strong.

I think you answered your own question when you wrote "occasional commercials."Pandora is trying a different approach than terrestrial radio: rather than ten minutes of commercials an hour, they're keeping them really sparse. This allows them to keep the site for free for most people, and ask the people like you who really enjoy them (since you listen to more than 30 hours a month) to help financially.I disagree with you that this is wanting to have it both ways. It might be you who want it both ways... you want it to be free, like commercial radio, but you also like the fact that commercials are rare.As for your "why so greedy?" question -- you should keep in mind that nobody at Pandora is making lots of money. They've had to lay off some staffers and it's been a struggle for them -- as it has been for all network radio stations -- to deal with the whole royalty issue. It's less greed, and more like a struggle for survival. I disagree with you that it's a "retarded notion" and I believe that your "WTF?" is a little harsh.

Agreed, I have a fairly nice FLAC collection (and I'm really strict about it, only full albums, perfectly tagged, and only FLAC) and I would hate to lose it. I'm in the process of backing it up online, it isn't easy to backup 110GB of music. I like streaming audio and web radio because it is a great way to hear new stuff and discover new music, but what I really think of it is just a place to find what next to download in FLAC. Although it's only 4000 songs or so it has most of my favorite songs and those are what I want to listen to in the car, so streaming portable audio isn't necessary for me. Also for car I don't mind listening to regular radio, there are some good FM stations on my typical drive. Just because it isn't digital doesn't mean it isn't worth listening to.
